Pit ponies

It is not widely known that the last deep-mine pit ponies in Britain finished work at Ellington colliery as recently as 1994, and probably even less so that ponies continued to work at small private coal mines in South Wales until 1999, from where this portfolio comes. These South Wales ponies lived above ground and were well cared for, but this did not prevent the mine owners from being regularly hassled by animal rights activists.
