Poor people scavenging along tracksides for coal have always been a feature of steam railways around the world. However, this series of images covers the ashpickers from Indian locomotive depots who were employed to be there. Their job was not just to remove the ash raked from the fireboxes of the locos, but also to sort it for any pieces not completely burnt, and bag this for resale.
